If a large public sandy beach with lots of other families with kids is what you are looking for check out Crystal Lake between Boulder Junction and Sayner for a place to build sand castles and swim.  A premiere little lake that warms up quickly and stays weed free throughout the summer.

For an animal adventure go to the Wildwood Wildlife Park in Miocqua - 715-356-5588.

Our Favorite Things!

We have been coming to the North woods for many years.  Over the years we have compiled a list of our favorite things to do or places to go in the North woods.  Hopefully some of our favorites will become yours as well!

There are many great shops in the area. All of the local towns such as Sayner, St. Germain, Eagle River, Minocqua, Boulder Junction offer their own mix of unique shops.   Two of our favorites to visit include Past Times Gift Shop in Sayner - 715- 542- 3837 and Sara Muenders Art Gallery in Boulder Junction.

There has been major improvements and expansions on bike trails in this area.  Our favorite area bike trail begins in Boulder Junction and ends in Sayner.  This black topped trail takes you in and out of the forest and past Trout Lake and Crystal Lake.  This trail will eventually connect with St Germain once completed. Bikes can be rented at many of the gas stations and local stores for a small daily fee.

For maps of this trail:

For off road trails that wind through the forest and are off the beaten path check out this link. These trails are little more rustic. One of our favorites that is minutes away from the cabin is at Shannon Lake. The trail surronding the lake itself is not long but challenging winding though the forest. The trails not directly surronding the lake are a bit less challenging but no less scenic.

For a fishing guide we have turned to Patricia Strutz.  Great for beginners and experience fishermen and women looking to catch a Musky! In fact Melanie caught her first Musky with Patricia. Additional quality guides can be found at the shop that Patricia works out of which is Guides Pro Choice Pro Shop out of Eagle River Guides Pro Choice is also a fun place to take the kids because they have a huge aquariam with serveral very large Walleye, Musky and Northern which can be fed for a small fee. Guides Pro Choice is located on Hwy 45 as you come into Eagle River. See our Lost Lake page for additional recommended fishing guides and specific fishing tips for Lost Lake.

To check out the local fishing report go to as they have most up to date information. This link will bring you to the fishing forums link for all of Vilas county lakes. Other great fishing lakes are within minutes if you want to trailer your boat and try one of the other fabulous lakes in Vilas or Oneida counties.

Whether you are looking for a challenging round of 18 holes or a fun par three for the family to enjoy there are several perfect golf course within minutes that we enjoy. For 18 holes visit the St Germain Golf Club For 9 holes with a beautifully lake side setting choose the Plum Lake Golf Club For the whole family try the relaxing 9 hole, Par 3, course The 19th Hole (mini-golf also available) located across from St. Germain Golf Club.

To get away to a quiet lake without any motor boats and really see some wildlife or fish in peace and quiet take the canoe and paddle out on these three lakes we have been to and love: Little Bass Lake and Shannon Lake in St. Germain and Frank Lake just north of Sayner.

There are many great restaurants in the area, here are just a few of our favorites!
